(1821-1872) As a landscape painter Duncanson was a famous artist who was known for his salon paintings and grand pictures. He also painted numerous portraits of abolitionists. He was one of the first African American artists to be known internationally and he helped establish the Ohio River Valley Style and was influenced by the Hudson River School. Duncanson was known for his ability to humanize the natural landscape and alluded to its natural innocence.
