Chief modeller for Josiah Wedgwood, Hackwood was commissioned to design the cameo for the abolitionist society. The "Am I not a man and a brother?" cameo was worn by abolitionists to promote their cause. The design consisted of a kneeling slave with chains, begging for his freedom.
