Jemmy:
African slave who led others in what was later called the Stono River Rebellion. Jemmy was from central Africa and caught in battle along with his fellow soldiers, and sold into slavery. He ended up in South Carolina, outside of Charleston and trained other slaves in how to use weapons. As they escaped from the plantation, Jemmy led the group to Stono River, where they overtook an ammunitions store and marched toward Fort Mose, Fl where the Spanish were giving assylum to fugitive slaves. On their march, the group was overthrown by white slave owners. Those who were a part of the rebellion, including Jemmy were hanged. Several laws were created after the rebellion to have tigher restrictions on slaves.
