Slavery determined American history and represents foundation that it is built on. The great injustice and pain caused to African Americans represents the dark period , but it must be remembered to pay respect to people who suffered . The men and women who fought for their rights to be equal did not have many ways to fight and resist great torture. Despite all of this they remained strong. They fought with their hands, they fought with weapons, they fought with their strength and among many other things, they fought with their music. Music was the way to communicate, the way to express anger and suffering and to remember. Music was the one thing that could never been taken away from them. That is why it should be celebrated and be the symbol of their suffering and their culture that persisted. On the other hand, chains are the symbol of slavery and stolen freedom. Combined together, these two elements create memorial that in right way tells a story about American slaves. It is an urban element that stands alone. It has the sitting area and above this area is console that holds chains hanging. For people who stand or sit under it, it should create feeling of something heavy and rough hanging over them, like huge black cloud over their heads. Chains could be moved by the wind or by hand creating sound. That sound is the sound of chained music.
