The Mission
The purpose of this competition is to commemorate the African and African American victims of the institution of American slavery by creating a place where ideas for memorials to them can be submitted, discussed, and exhibited.
Presumably the entries will have varying foci:
The physical intensity of slavery. The perseverance of man. the dignity of man. The expression through writing and visual art.
The rememberance of slavery can be represented in many ways, and ideas, images and writings the competition elicits will spark discussion on the website. The collection of all these ideas and expressions will then become a powerful memorial in itself.
This memorial competition is not meant to dwell only on the victimization of slavery but, instead, to commemorate and express how African Americans have overcome and persevered from that oppression and to examine how the institution of slavery in the United States still affects race relations today.
