(1816-1898) A printmaker in New York City, Reason did portrait engravings for anti-slavery societies. Reason made his own interpretation of the kneeling slaves but instead of looking docile he depicted the slave as a pious figure, like he was praying. Through his work as an engraver, Reason was a part the abolitionist movement and used imagery as propaganda.
