Addison Scurlock, "Booker T. Washington" Washington, Booker T:

(1856-1915) Booker T Washington was born into slavery in Virginia and then freed after the Civil War.  Washington worked for several years before attending school.  He became an educator and was asked to head the new university, Tuskegee University, in Alabama.  He obliged and stayed as the head of the university until he died.

Besides being an educator he was also pusher for equal rights.  His tactics were different from others, such as DuBois, believing that by going slow and steady was better than the more direct and uncompromising tactics of Dubois'.
